A Letter to the Editor

don't trust the shoes to do the work for you!

Why is it every article about getting yourself into shape has to include getting yourself some super-duper cushioned and supportive shoes? I was reading Men's Journal on a flight to L.A. a couple months ago and ran across their "10 New Commandments" of mind and body fitness, in which they were (surprise!) hawking a pair of Reebok super shoes that promised to neutralize the SHOCK AND IMPACT of running.

What every shoe company won't tell you, of course is that the only way to minimize the MASSIVE SHOCK AND HORRIBLE LIFE ALTERING TRAUMA of simply running can be avoided by wearing less shoe!

Naturally...I had to comment on it. Little did I know they'd print my letter!

Meanwhile, on the running front, I've been getting some good base building runs in, as well as some short hill workouts. I'm the barefoot guy on the hotel treadmill. I don't want to jump into anything too nutty until I'm comfortable with a few 12-15 mile runs.

I also dropped my fairly useless gym membership (I realized that I really only used it as a shower after I got done playing outside). I am going to be working out at home as well as looking into Methode Naturelle, pioneered by a man named Georges Herbert. It focuses on building functional strength rather than building showy muscles that can only do a few actions well.

So with that, I am off to play outside!

Enjoy your 15 minutes.... or nano seconds of fame.

Another way one can lessen impact of running is to....... hold your breath.....

Lose weight!

I never see that as a solution. Only, as you pointed out, investing in expensive shoes.

People are surprised to find that I only spend $40-$60 on shoes. Shoes wear out, I don't care how fancy they are.

I might have to buy this issue and have you sign it. Then again.... I probably won't
