It seems I have had plenty of time off to think about what I want to do this season. I have mulled over a variety of options, fancy out of state ultras, the pikes peak adventure, epic journeys through honest to god mountains...etc., etc.
But I am beginning to think that what I am truly drawn to is the great north woods and the journeys that I have started and finished there that have provided such great memories and sparked some wonderful friendships.
I had wanted to try for an outright victory in the MN Trail Series this year, but given my current schedule of traveling will prohibit about half of those races (but will also allow me to run in new and strange places) and the fact that Bryan Erickson is probably going to win it all this year...I am going to opt out of the short stuff and give myself one goal for the season.
I am going to run the Superior 100 Mile beginning September 11, 2009 and god willing, finishing on September 12, 2009.
Training starts tomorrow.
Advice, as usual, is highly appreciated.

I am no help in this department as I neither run trails nor ultrs, but best of luck as you plan!
I don't feel qualified to offer advice for this goal, but I'll sure be pulling for you. I'm confident that it will be an epic journey, no matter the outcome.
Good luck in your training. A month or two ago (I don't remember what city) I was on the hotel treadmill and the guy on the other treadmill was doing a pretty serious workout in bare feet. Could that have been you? Or perhaps another minimalist runner.
Thanks for the well wishes, all! Joga what hotel/city was it?It's certainly possible!
I'll join the group of those unqualified to advise. If it's memories your after though I'm sure it will live up to your expectations. Should be fun training.
Train as if it's going to be 135 miles. In other words, give up on family, friends and work so you can spend your weekends running up and down hills - 30 times up the Brickyard hill and you can finish. That's my plan.
What is the footwear plan, VFFs? I did my first barefoot outdoor run of the season yesterday and it felt great!
Scott Mark...As of this moment, I am planning on running in the VFF's, I might try the FLOW model because of slightly more cushion underfoot. It might be a good shoe to switch into near the middle of the race.
Steve - I wish I could train like an ascetic, but am going to strive for balance on this one. I guess it's a good thing brickyard hill is right in my backyard!
Good for you! Best of luck with training - I look forward to seeing how it goes!
Good stuff! More than happy to share any and all details that I can remember from the race... though of course it's all in the training. One of my goals for this year is more night runs at Afton - I'd say there's good benefit for making the most of the dark hours during the race.
